The FOGAP 2025 Day of Learning
The Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP) through the Advanced Orebody Knowledge (AOK), participated in the Fall of Ground Action Plan (FOGAP) 2025 Annual Day of Learning hosted by the Minerals Council of South Africa on 25 March 2025 at Emperor Palace, Johannesburg.
The FOGAP Day of Learning showcased innovative strategies to address Fall of Ground Fatalities in the mining industry. The program included the showcasing of solutions such as exoskeletons, drilling guides, enhanced illumination, real-time hazard warning technologies, critical elements for zero-harm enabling environment, and net support for hanging wall.
This annual gathering plays a critical role in the ongoing efforts to eliminate fall-of-ground in the mining industry. “The program is more than just about reporting the progress journey in achieving zero fatalities, it is about strengthening collective commitment to make operations safer,” said Minerals Council South Africa CEO, Mzila Mthenjane
Between 1 January 2025 and March 2025, seven people had died due to falls of ground accidents, this contrasts with the one fatality recorded during the same period in 2024. “We are saddened by the loss of lives, and at the same time, though, inspired to continue to drive the implementation of fall of ground action plans across the whole industry,” added Mthenjane.
Researchers presented insights on Fall of Ground related projects proving a deeper understanding of the science and innovation behind these safety measures. “Every step we take towards improving falls of ground safety performance is a step towards ensuring that every mine worker returns home safely at the end of their shift,” concluded Mthenjane.
