In 2021, the SATCAP Programme focused on people development for modern mining, with specific focus on modern training methodologies to support a modern workforce.
SATCAP Learning Academy
About the Learning Academy
‘Art of possible’ exemplar training modules were developed, and these showcase digital application for training, like VR and AR training methodologies for Miners and RDOs, a Supervisory leadership development module, with digital and classroom learning options, as well as a digital literacy module to enable mines to build capacity of the workforce towards digital transformation.
A change management training module is also provided to impart skills on the management of change and change management to enable leaders to lead and drive change.
Supervisory Leadership
The SATCAP Learning Academy showcases an ‘art of possible’ exemplar training module on Supervisory Leadership Development, towards building the leadership capacity of supervisors to lead and drive mining modernisation.
The module focuses on supervisory leader skills, in amongst others, overseeing teams of employees and guiding them in their daily operations.
Change Management
The SATCAP Learning Academy showcases ‘art of possible’ exemplar training modules on Change Management, towards building the capacity of leaders to lead the management of change and drive change management.
Change management in mining is the systematic approach to transitioning individuals, teams, and organizations from a current state to a desired future state, with minimal disruption and maximum adoption of the change.
Digital Literacy
The SATCAP Learning Academy showcases an ‘art of possible’ exemplar training module on Digital Literacy towards enabling mines to build capacity of the workforce towards digital transformation.
Digital Literacy refers to the ability to use digital technology, communication tools, and networks effectively and responsibly. It encompasses a range of skills, including computer and internet use, digital security and privacy, and the ability to navigate and create digital content.
Human-Centered Design
The SATCAP Learning Academy showcases an ‘art of possible’ webinar highlighting Human-Centered design and Design-Thinking in the context of mining modernization, which, refers to the process of designing and implementing mining processes, technologies, and systems with the needs and perspectives of workers, communities, and other stakeholders at the forefront. This approach aims to create more inclusive, equitable, efficient, and sustainable outcomes in the modernized mining sector.
Art of the Possible AR and VR in Mining Modernisation
In 2021, to enable modern training for a modern workforce SATCAP showcased as the ‘art of possible’ use of VR and AR in training – more specifically for of Miners and RDOs; and to support potential skills development, upskilling and reskilling of mine employees.
AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) may provide immersive and interactive training experiences for mining employees. As part of the SATCAP ‘art of the possible’, AR and VR examples were used for the enchantment of mine safety and capability training for RDO’s (Rock Drill Operators) and DRO’s (Drill Rig Operators). It was showcased that VR technology may be used to simulate hazardous mining scenarios, allowing employees to develop critical safety skills in a safe environment. AR was also considered to enable modernised training.
Complementary to classroom-based learning, AR and VR may be powerful supportive methodologies in modernizing mining training, and makes training more stimulating, interactive and engaging for mine employees.
