The Mandela Mining Precinct (MMP), through its Real-Time Information Management Systems (RTIMS) programme, has taken a significant step toward contributing to a more resilient, innovative, and globally competitive mining sector in South Africa.

In response to rapid changes across the industry including the rise of automation, artificial intelligence, and digital technologies, as well as increasing pressure for sustainable and ethical mining practices, the MMP has developed a comprehensive RTIMS capability roadmap. This roadmap provides a clear, forward-looking plan to guide the mining sector over the next 5 to 10 years.

The roadmap addresses a complex and evolving landscape. Mining companies today must navigate volatile commodity markets, ageing infrastructure, workforce transitions, and growing expectations from communities and investors. At the same time, there is a need to improve safety, productivity, and environmental performance. RTIMS plays a critical role in responding to these challenges by enabling better, faster decision-making through real-time data.

The RTIMS Capability Roadmap

The development of the roadmap followed a structured, multi-phase approach, combining research, stakeholder engagement, and future-focused thinking.

Through a series of workshops and studies, the MMP worked with industry stakeholders to explore the multiple possible (current), plausible (medium-term) and probable (long-term) futures for mining. These insights were used to build a future business landscape, helping leaders understand how the industry might evolve and what capabilities will be required to succeed.

The final output is a practical, South Africa-specific RTIMS capability roadmap. It outlines key areas that mining companies need to focus on, including:

• Market readiness: Responding to global demand, regulatory pressures, and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) expectations
• Products and services: Supporting innovation in low-carbon and high-value minerals
• Technology and processes: Using RTIMS to enable real-time safety monitoring, predictive maintenance, and more adaptive operations
• Skills and knowledge: Building a workforce equipped with digital, data, and systems-thinking capabilities
