Tell us about yourself and what you do

I am a Christian eco-feminist with a Post Graduate Diploma in Project Management and a strong academic foundation in Environmental Geography and BSc Honours in Geography. Currently registered as a GIS Technologist in training with the South African Geomatics Council (SAGC), I am passionate about continuous learning in Environmental Science, GIS, women’s rights, and project management methodologies. My experience at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research, particularly within the Mandela Mining Precinct, has honed my project management skills. I am well-prepared for my current role as Project Administrator for Longevity of Current Mines and Mechanised Mining Systems.

What defining moment or experience set you on your path, and how has it shaped who you are today?

A defining moment for me was during my undergraduate studies in Environmental Geography, when I participated in a field project focused on sustainable land management in a rural community. Witnessing firsthand the impact of environmental degradation on local livelihoods and the potential for positive change through sustainable practices was eye-opening. This experience ignited my passion for combining environmental advocacy with practical solutions.

It was this moment that solidified my commitment to eco-feminism and drove me to pursue further education and a career in project management with a focus on environmental sustainability. It shaped my approach to integrating gender perspectives into environmental projects and has continually motivated me to advocate for both environmental and social justice. This foundation has guided my professional journey, influencing my roles and ongoing commitment to continuous learning and impactful work in the fields of environmental science and project management.

In what ways do you hope your journey will inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in your field?

I hope my journey will inspire and pave the way for future generations of women in my field by demonstrating the power of integrating passion with professional expertise. By embracing a multidisciplinary approach—combining environmental science, project management, and gender advocacy—I aim to show that it’s possible to effect meaningful change through a holistic perspective.

My commitment to eco-feminism and continuous learning is a testament to the importance of perseverance and adaptability in tackling complex challenges. I aspire to be a role model who exemplifies how dedication and a clear sense of purpose can drive progress in both environmental and gender equity issues.

Additionally, I strive to create pathways for young women by actively participating in mentorship programs, sharing my experiences and insights, and advocating for policies that support diversity and inclusion in the workplace. By highlighting the achievements and contributions of women in these fields, I hope to inspire others to pursue their passions and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable future.

What’s a book, movie, or song that has had a significant impact on your life or career and how?

Both The Impossible (2012) movie and the “Take a Girl Child to Work” event with the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL), particularly the exposure to global infrastructure practices, have profoundly impacted my life and career in distinct yet interconnected ways.

The Impossible (2012 Movie):

The Impossible powerfully illustrated human resilience and the critical importance of preparedness and effective response in the face of natural disasters. The movie’s portrayal of the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami underscored the urgent need for robust disaster management systems and resilient infrastructure. This has influenced my approach to project management by emphasizing the necessity of integrating risk assessment and disaster preparedness into planning and execution. The emotional and practical lessons from the film have strengthened my commitment to developing infrastructure projects that are not only sustainable but also resilient to extreme events.

Take a Girl Child to Work Event with SANRAL:

The “Take a Girl Child to Work” event, combined with insights into global infrastructure practices, particularly from China, was transformative for me. The event provided an opportunity to see firsthand the impact of infrastructure development on communities and the importance of involving diverse perspectives in these projects. Learning about China’s rapid and innovative infrastructure development highlighted the possibilities and importance of embracing advanced technologies and efficient project management practices. It also reinforced the value of mentorship and representation in encouraging young girls to pursue careers in engineering and related fields.

These experiences have collectively shaped my career in several ways:

  • Enhanced Understanding of Resilience and Preparedness: The lessons from The Impossible have reinforced the importance of incorporating resilience and risk management into infrastructure projects. This understanding drives my approach to ensuring that projects are designed with foresight and adaptability in mind.
  • Global Perspective on Infrastructure: Exposure to China’s infrastructure development methods has broadened my perspective on best practices and innovations in the field. It has inspired me to advocate for and implement cutting-edge technologies and practices in my projects.
  • Commitment to Mentorship and Inclusion: The “Take a Girl Child to Work” event underscored the importance of mentorship and role models. It motivates me to actively support and mentor young women in my field, helping to pave the way for greater gender equity in infrastructure and engineering.
  • Inspiration for Holistic Project Management: Combining insights from both the movie and the SANRAL event, I strive to adopt a holistic approach to project management that considers both the human and technical aspects, ensuring that projects are both innovative and impactful.

These experiences have shaped my approach to my work and advocacy, reinforcing my commitment to creating resilient, innovative, and inclusive infrastructure solutions.
